Abortion
A
Pro-choice- Spiritual Outlook
|
Hi
Lisa,
Do you think abortion is right or wrong? I had an abortion
and I felt that it was the right thing for me to do. I was
raped and only 17 years old at the time. Yet, a friend of
mine feels that I have committed a terrible sin and should
ask God for forgiveness or else go to hell.

Hi
Pam,
First,
let me say that I am sorry to hear that such a terrible thing
occurred to you and I admire your bravery for even asking this
question publicly.
My
Political View On Abortion-
|
I
am Pro-choice. I believe that the government should respect
a woman's right to choose. However, I do not think that
having an abortion is right for every woman, and I believe
that women should consider having a child or adoption in
addition to the option of abortion. I also think that women
who make a habit of having many abortions are irresponsible
and should be counseled about their reckless behavior.
My
Spiritual View On Abortion-
What
I don't often hear from people is the spiritual attitudes
of those who are pro-choice about abortion as you so often
do from those who are pro-life. Thus, I thought to share
my thoughts as a way to express my thoughts on this issue
on that level.
As
I am a pretty spiritually progressive person, I feel that
there is nothing that is black and white in our world. We
are surrounded by complex opportunities for growth in every
moment. What promotes growth for one human being may not
for another and thus is why I feel that it is not for me
to decide if something such as abortion is right or wrong
for someone else.
On
a more in-depth spiritual level, I believe that we all have
a soul. I believe that it is our soul's purpose to have
certain life experiences in order for our soul to evolve.
What one soul wishes to experience in order to evolve may
not always be what we expect and could possibly include
that of an abortion as the woman or the unborn fetus.

Often
it seems that the people who speak with hatred and venom
about an issue are the ones who struggle the most with
the very issue they are yelling so loudly about.
Such
is the case with
* Paula Jones' lawyer Susan Carpenter-McMillan who is
quite outspoken about the ills of legal abortion, but
whom has had two abortions herself.

Paula Jones filed a formal complaint against President
Clinton alleging sexual harassment and defamation of character
on May 6, 1994.

Does
an unborn fetus "deserve" an abortion?
I
think one of the most common misperceptions about life that we
have is that we think we get what we deserve; that somehow our
lives directly reflect whether we are a good person or not. How
many times do you hear "I can't believe that happened to
them, they are such a good person!", or "how come they
get so many breaks, they are a horrible person."
If
good people got what they deserved, and those with malicious behavior
got their just desserts than the world would be a very different
place. I believe we are more complex beings than that. Doesn't
it seem to be that we experience things based on what our soul
wants for us to experience using it's own divine wisdom for us
to evolve rather than whether we deserve it or not?
Think
of it this way, does a good person deserve to get cancer, become
paralyzed in a car accident or even have someone they love die?
Do they deserve to become pregnant when they are raped? No, so
why do we tend to presume that an abortion is not something that
our soul wants to experience as a way to have insight, empathy
and wisdom? That is of course assuming you believe an unborn fetus
has a soul or is what fully makes us conscious as a human being.
These are certainly controversial but factually unknown matters.
What
is the divine purpose?
What
if a soul comes into this life to have that experience? Why do
women have miscarriages, why do our children die before their
parents... certainly this does not make sense based on the belief
that we get what we deserve or that somehow everything that is
pleasant is what our soul needs to evolve.
That
is why I believe that abortion is something we must find the answer
for inside ourselves, inside our heart where we can often hear
the wisdom of our soul speaking to us. What that answer is in
regard to abortion is a choice I do not feel I have the right
to make for someone else and thus, I do not feel that anyone in
our government should either.
Also,
whether it is legal or illegal, it will occur and whether or not
it is right for the person who is experiencing it is truly a matter
they have to address with their own soul.
Bottom
line on the way I see it... if it feels right for the individual
then I trust they are making the right choice for themselves and
will find wisdom from their experience. That is my opinion; more
importantly for you, what is yours?
