Psychic- A BAD Word?

By Lisa S. Lawless, Ph.D., Holistic Wisdom C.E.O.

I admit it, I have really cringed when I used the word "psychic" to describe the intuition development book that I offer. I went back and forth on my site, putting the word "psychic" on, then taking it off, then putting it back on again. While I believe that all of us have psychic ability, (some have it more developed, while others need to work at it a bit more) I still struggle with the word psychic, and the negative associations it has.

I recently got into a discussion with a dear friend of mine discussing the meaning of psychic ability versus intuition. When it comes down to it, I believe that while they essentially mean the same thing... we both admitted a higher comfort level with the word intuition, and discomfort with the word psychic.

How can any one ignore the negative connotation with the word "psychic". The scam artists, the mind games, the trivalization of the ability. I will be the first to admit that there are a great deal of scam artists out there. They use fear, slick talk, and manipulation to get money from their clients with great dishonor.

So what is an ethical, professional intuitive to do? As a teacher of intuition development, I think the best policy is to be straight forward and address any concerns that potential clients may have. Acknowledgment of the "bad" professional psychics is important. We can't ignore them, nor should we. Reporting any unethical behavior to authorities is important. Being clear with clients about what to expect within a session is also crucial.

A professional psychic should empower their clients with encouragement to do what feels right to them. They should come from a compassionate place with the intention to assist their clients. Also it is important to remember that an authentic psychic can only tell you what is currently going on, not what is going to happen in the future. Psychic ability does not allow us to concretely see what is going to happen in the future, only the potential for the future, and that is a huge difference!

As we have free will, so do we have many paths we can choose to take in any given moment. A psychic can not predict which path you will choose, only the potential for your choice. That is why I have chosen not to do psychic readings, but to teach others how to intuit for themselves... as in every moment we have the opportunity to choose, and that can change our whole future. Learning how to tap into your own psychic ability, allows you to use it moment by moment to access the information most connected to your potential future. Unless you are on the phone or with someone else who accesses the psychic information for you... I suggest you learn how to use your own psychic ability. Not just for the insight into your life, but to empower and trust yourself and your choices.
