At-Home Fertility Testing Options

Forty percent of infertile couples find that it is the male partner who is contributing cause of the inability to conceive, so infertility is something many men wish to test should a couple find conception is not occurring. Male fertility is a complicated area, and it has many contributing factors, which means that at-home tests are not going to give you a complete picture of what is going on. Positive results from an at-home fertility test do not mean that you do not have fertility issues. However, if a test indicates that sperm count is below 20 million sperm per milliliter (negative), then it may quickly be able to tell you if you need to see a specialist.

Standard testing of male fertility is typically done through the following means:

Sperm and Semen Analysis

A man's sperm is assessed for its count, shape, movement, and other features.

Physical Exam

Health factors such as an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, testicular size, and other physical aspects are best performed by a urologist.

Hormone Evaluation

A variety of hormones control sperm production, and while this is not as common an issue in cases of infertility, it can be an area to explore.

Genetic Testing

This can show specific obstacles to fertility; however, this type of testing is rarely done as experts disagree with how important this may be in treating infertility.

At-Home Fertility Testing Kits

Fertility testing kits have opened up options beyond the standard fertility clinics for men concerned about their sperm count. Tests measures sperm concentration and determines whether an individual registers above or below 20 million sperm cells per milliliter, the concentration value recommended by the World Health Organization.

Men who use it are told the volume, sperm concentration per milliliter, and motility. Sperm concentration is an essential factor, but it doesn't always tell a man's whole fertility story. Manufacturers of these tests point out that a positive test is no guarantee of fertility. But, they can provide a relatively simple way to see if there is a problem, at which point a visit to a fertility specialist is recommended.

The Best 5 At-Home Fertility Tests

  • Best Overall: Modern Fertility

With only half of the infertile men who take such tests having recognizable causes of infertility detectable by semen analysis, it can prove to be a difficult test to do at home with fully accurate results. If you decide you would like to take an at-home male fertility test, you can purchase them through your local drug store. Also, see our Pregnancy Friendly Lubricant Guide.

Low Sperm Count & Frequent Ejaculations

According to a study published in Fertility and Sterility by Dr. Elisabeth Carlsen of Copenhagen Rigshospitalet. Here are some more interesting facts on male ejaculation:

  • Men ejaculate more frequently in the spring than in the winter.

  • The seasons don't lead to changes in sperm count, motility (movement), or shape.

  • Sperm count falls 29% with two ejaculations a week and drops 41% with three ejaculations.

  • Ejaculating frequently doesn't affect motility or shape.
