Prevent AIDS
Programs that promote abstinence and monogamy to combat AIDS are
failing in a landmark Ugandan study, and only condom use has kept
the deadly virus in check, researchers reported. About 30 percent
of women with nonmarital partners use condoms consistently." They
found that 50 percent of men and boys aged 15 to 49 reported using
condoms consistently with their most recent nonmarital sex partner.
"By African standards that's incredibly high," she said.
So
many people die of AIDS that the number of new infections cannot
keep up, thus keeping the percentage of HIV-infected people in
the population constant. They are not seeing any increases in
the rate of new infections, but that situation could change with
the introduction of drugs that help control AIDS. People often
mistakenly believe they cure the virus or that they can help prevent
its spread and in turn abandon safe sex practices. That is why
education is so important. Knowledge is power!
