Alan Keyes
Disowns Lesbian Daughter

The 19-year-old
daughter of Alan Keyes is being disowned by her father Alan Keyes.
Alan is an anti-gay
rights conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate.
He is sadly seeming to discard his daughter now that she is publicly
acknowledging that she is a lesbian.
Maya Marcel-Keyes
made her first public appearance as a gay activist at a Valentine
Day's rally in front of the Maryland State House. Last summer
her father caused a stir during the Republican convention by labeling
Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter a sinner and calling
homosexuality "selfish hedonism."
Maya has
been thrown out of the house, her parents refuse to speak with
her and refuse to pay for college because she is gay. Maya however,
desires to keep the peace with her parents and does not want this
to be turned into a war between them as some of the press would
like to focus on.
Maya grew
up in Darnestown, Md., attended a conservative Catholic school
for girls in McLean, Va., spent a year in the south of India advocating
tribal rights, and plans to attend Brown University this fall.
So why is
Alan so quick to attack the children of others when his own daughter
is gay? Why is he so virulently anti-homosexual? Why does it seem
that so many high-profile anti-gay figures have a gay child? Perhaps
the spiritual lesson is of compassion, not hatred.
We commend
Maya for her courage and hope that Alan and her mother can understand
that a parent's greatest achievement is to provide unconditional
love to their children.
After all, isn't it supposed to be the "Christian" thing
to do... show mercy, unconditional love and non-judgement toward
others or is that just when it is convenient? We hope that Maya's
parents can see that she is simply being true to herself and standing
up for her own convictions.
