Like
many women, I gained a lot of weight after my pregnancy with my
son, and I was really struggling to get off those horrible 40
lbs I had gained beyond the baby weight. I tried reducing my calories,
eating balanced meals, and exercising 45-60 minutes a day on my
exercise bike. Yet, I found that my body had really become used
to the larger number of calories that I had been consuming to
put the excess weight on in the first place. Now, not only was
I taking away those calories that my body was so accustomed to,
but I was working them off to lose weight and feeling my body
get pretty pissed off with me for trying to make this change.
I struggled with hunger pain, and felt emotionally raw because
I wanted to do this so badly, but was having such a hard time
getting through this transitional phase.
Two
weeks into my weight loss program, I found I was unable to sleep
because I was fighting back hunger pains, and becoming preoccupied
with food. This was my fifth attempt at losing weight since the
pregnancy, my son was 1 year old and I was really becoming discouraged.
At
the time, I worked for a psychiatric hospital and found myself
one morning sharing my plight with a co-worker who had shed 80
pounds. I began to cry as I told her how upset with myself I felt
that I could not get past a month without slipping back into old
habits. I explained to her that I was eating enough calories for
my BMI (Body Mass Index) and had studied nutrition enough to know
that I was not making it harder for myself by eating such things
as "white carbs;" those carbohydrates that cause you
to want more food because you providing it with no significant
nutritional value (i.e.: pop corn, pasta, white bread; unlike
the good carbs found in brown rice, wheat bread and whole grains).
I
told my co-worker that if I could just get past the first two
months so that I could allow my body to get used to all the exercise,
water intake and smaller intake of calories that I knew I would
be able to handle it. She smiled a knowing smile as she had gone
through the exact same struggle after the birth of her child and
put on 80lbs. She asked me if I had ever considered taking a diet
drug (amphetamine) such as Phentermine or Merida. I know I must
of given her a horrified look of shock because she started to
laugh and told me that it was not as bad as I thought.
She
explained to me that these types of amphetamines had been around
for a long time (since around the 1950's and before) and that
the long term side effects had been shown to be minimal if any.
Now, she had my attention because I was skeptical that something
like this was safe or could help me.
I
began my research. I was not about to take something like this
without really knowing what I was getting myself into. I
acknowledge that there is also a stigma to taking an amphetamine
as being unhealthy and unsafe and being that I am in the field
of holistic health... I was not about to jump into this lightly.
The key here is to be educated about using these types of drugs.
Before I took this weight loss medication I spent hours researching
them and even interviewed two pharmacists and two physicians from
different backgrounds.
After
my research assured me that these drugs were safe and effective,
I looked into how I could get a prescription (I will refer you
to a place online at the end of the article if you are interested).
My friend referred me to a clinic that she
had gone to that specialized in weight loss to be evaluated for
the prescription. At the time Phen/Fen was popular and easy to
get. The doctor that I received the prescription from was actually
encouraging me to take both (Phentermine and Fenfluramine). You
may think what kind of Doctor would encourage that!? Well, this
was before Fenfluramine was banned in the Doctor's defense, but
still... why push two drugs when a patient is only requesting
one?
What
you should know about doctors is that they are not trained well
in medications. They are trained primarily in diagnosis and treatment.
Pharmaceuticals is a huge money driven business and they love
giving doctors samples and kick backs to peddle their medications.
Doctors who do not know any thing more about the drugs than what
the drug companies are telling them are just as ignorant at times
as to what these drugs negative side effects are as a random person
off the street.
I
mean, haven't you ever wondered why Doctors aren't the ones that
distribute medications? There is a good reason for this! Pharmacists
are trained in medications. Often they are quite serious when
you come to the counter and they are carefully reviewing your
prescriptions because they know all too well that Doctors are
often careless in writing prescriptions and prescribe medications
that can be harmful when mixed with another prescription the patient
may already be on. That is why I interviewed the pharmacists first
in my research because I trust their understanding of medications
much more than a medical physician.
So,
when the Doctor at the weight loss clinic thought it a good idea
that I took both drugs in the infamous Phen/Fen cocktail... I
told her that I felt very strongly that NO ONE should be taking
Fenfluramine after what I had found about it. Having read damning
information about Fenfluramine which was known to cause health
problems cardiovascularly well before they the FDA banned it,
I ended up educating the weight loss Doctor about her own specialty
(Scary huh?). This is why I teach empowerment in all that I do
through my writing, consults, workshops, etc., because ultimately
it is up to us to make the right choices for ourselves and giving
our "power" away to anyone including physicians can
be dangerous.
I
ended up taking a medication called Bontril. This is similar to
Merida, Phentermine and other amphetamines and their side effects
are minor and short-term if you are healthy. I lost 40 lbs that
I have kept off for three years.
You
should speak with a doctor to determine if you are generally healthy
if you have concerns and you should definitely monitor your blood
pressure once or twice every two weeks if you do decide to try
these medications as they are known to make it temporarily go
up. Personally, the only side effect I ever had was "dry
mouth," meaning I just needed to drink water or suck on a
hard candy from time to time as my mouth felt like it was as dry
as a cotton ball.
What
I can say is that using one of these medications is a whole lot
safer than using Epehdra and Ma Hang found
in products like Dexitrim and Metabolife. Some studies are now
showing that this drug/herb can be quite dangerous. My
opinion is to stay away from things that have not been well documented
to not cause harmful side effects.
While
some find it contradicting for me to say that I promote holistic
approaches and still say that I took an appetite suppressant...
I disagree. Coming from a holistic view point means coming from
a place that allows you to view ALL options and to acknowledge
when getting assistance may be what you need. Just as there is
no shame in a smoker who is trying to quit using Zyban or Nicotine
gum to help take the edge of during the withdrawal period, I do
not feel there should be any shame in someone who is struggling
to lose weight to use aides that will assist them.
Ultimately
it should be understood that to loose weight and keep it off you
must change your lifestyle, not go on a temporary diet. That is
why I stress in the title of this article that using a weight
loss medication is short term.
You do need to take the time to go to a local grocery store or
other place where you can check your blood pressure at least once
every week or two. If it gets high you should get off the medication.
That is a problem with online pharmacy/clinics is that they do
not monitor you in this way and that is fine if you are willing
to do it yourself.
Amphetamines
can be addictive in that they give you a slight feeling of euphoria
(feeling good) and cut back your appetite significantly. Remember
to keep eating small amounts throughout the day to keep your metabolism
going (don't want to starve yourself or you will screw yourself
by having your metabolism slow down) and make sure to get off
the drugs after no more than four months. You should have adjusted
to the new life style that you have been working hard at getting
adapted to and you do not want to get into a situation where you
feel you can not stay thin without taking these drugs all the
time.
I
would like say that there is a lot more to nutrition and exercise
that I will cover in later articles, but for now, I wanted to
touch base on weight loss medication as it can be a great help
to those you are struggling as I had. I wish you the best of luck!

Most smokers spend countless hours during their smoking careers
trying to satisfactorily answer this most perplexing question.
Typically, answers they come up with are that they smoke because
they are unhappy, unsatisfied, nervous, bored, anxious, lonely,
tired or just frustrated without their cigarettes. Other reasons
often quoted are that cigarettes keep them thin, make them better
able to think, or that they are more sociable while smoking. Some
claim that they smoke to celebrate the joyful times of life. Food,
drink, fun and games, and even sex all seem to lose their appeal
without an accompanying cigarette. After hearing all of these
wonderful qualities attributed to cigarette smoking, I find myself
amazed that 33,000,000 Americans have successfully given up smoking.
What in the world is wrong with these ex-smokers? I can understand
people who never smoked. They never knew or believed all of these
wonderful benefits derived from smoking. What you never had you’ll
never miss. But these ex-smokers, having given up such a marvelous
habit with so many benefits, must be crazy.
The
fact is ex-smokers are not crazy. To the contrary, it was their
ability to be rational which enabled them to successfully break
free from cigarettes. They had the foresight to put themselves
through the pain and agony encountered during the initial withdrawal
from the nicotine addiction. It is both a powerful physical and
psychological addiction which creates many irrational beliefs
as defense mechanisms in order to perpetuate the smoking behavior.
Most
of the reasons mentioned above of why smokers claim they smoke
are such drug induced beliefs. All ex-smokers should be applauded
for their great accomplishment of overcoming the many obstacles
created by their addiction. Encountering the initial quitting
process creates a state of emotional insecurity and self doubt.
Will they ever able to survive in our complicated world without
their cigarettes? Once they became totally free of the grip which
cigarettes exerted upon them, they were able to get a clear perspective
of how many misconceptions they had about the benefits they thought
they derived from smoking. Being drug free after years of enslavement
brings a sense of relief and
accomplishment they never anticipated. To their pleasant surprise,
they discover the marvelous fact that there is life after smoking.
It is a healthier, calmer and more pleasant life. They now have
a choice as to whether or not they ever wish to smoke again. If
they look honestly and objectively at the advantages and disadvantages,
the logical choice is to remain ex-smokers.
Unfortunately,
some don’t remember all of the consequences associated with their
old habit, but only recall the infrequent good times they had
with their cigarettes. They think that they could once again enjoy
just a few cigarettes. What must be understood by all ex-smokers
is that they only have two options. They could smoke nothing or
they could smoke at their previous level of consumption. There
is no in-between. They are wasting their time contemplating how
nice it would be to be an occasional social smoker. They can never
again have that luxury.
All
ex-smokers must consider both options. Then if they choose to
smoke, all they need do is take their first cigarette and again
become trapped in the nicotine addiction. If they choose to remain
free, all they need is to follow the simple practice: NEVER TAKE
ANOTHER PUFF!

Many
smokers rate the fear of weight gain as their number-one barrier
to quitting. They worry that the weight they gain may be a greater
risk than their present smoking habit. This is unrealistic; to
reach the same health risk as smoking just one pack of cigarettes
per day, the average smoker would have to be roughly 125 pounds
overweight. The fact is that many, but not all, ex-smokers do
gain some weight after they quit.
One
study found that 60 percent of men and 51 percent of women ex-smokers
put on extra pounds. But the degree of weight gain is relatively
small in most cases. The average long-term weight gain for quitters
is about 5 pounds, and in one study, 23 percent of quitters actually
lost weight.
Smokers
weigh less because smoking depresses the appetite for certain
foods, while quitters, whose appetites are not suppressed, gain
weight because they take in more calories. Nicotine may also alter
the smoker's metabolism so that smokers burn more calories and
convert fewer calories into fat. In addition, smoking serves as
a meal terminator (rather than taking a second or third helping
or dessert, you are likely to stop eating and have a cigarette).
The
following strategies can help you prevent weight gain:
Strategy
1: Ignore it
The most common approach is to just go ahead and quit smoking—you
may be one of the lucky ones who gains little or no weight. This
is better for light smokers and those who would not be greatly
upset by gaining a few pounds.
Strategy
2: Exercise
It's
difficult to try to quit smoking and try to make other major life
changes. Thus you should begin a regular exercise program several
months before your planned quitting date. Not only will exercise
help keep your weight down, but it can provide you with an alternative
activity that will help you make it through cigarette withdrawal.
Strategy
3: Reduce sweets
You
needn't go on a full-scale, all-out diet. Instead, restrict the
type, not the quantity, of your food. One way to ease a craving
for sweets is to use sugar substitutes or eat more fruit. The
desire for sweets will fade as your body readjusts its blood sugar
level.
Strategy
4: Alter your routine
Practice
these mealtime and between-meal tips:
(1) Take smaller portions (encourage this by using small plates)
(2) Eat slowly and try to be the last one finished
(3) Put your fork down between bites
(4) Drink a large glass of water with each meal and take frequent
sips between bites
(5) Serve fruit for dessert or skip dessert altogether
(6) Get up from the table as soon as you finish
(7) Terminate your meal with a nonsmoking activity
(take a walk, brush your teeth, wash the dishes,
etc.)
(8) Stock up on raw vegetables for healthy between-meal snacks
(9) Go to bed earlier to avoid the temptation to snack.
Strategy
5: Do something dramatic
One
ex-smoker came up with a unique approach: "When I quit smoking
I gained 12 pounds. Determined to lose it, I drove to a supermarket
two miles from home, marched up to the butcher counter, and had
them grind me 12 pounds of hamburger. I left my car in the parking
lot and carried it home. By the time I got home I was exhausted.
I was carrying that much extra weight around with me every day—no
wonder I felt tired all the time! I gave most of the hamburger
away to friends and neighbors, then started a running program
the next day. I eventually shed those 12 pounds."
The
following strategies can help you prevent from slipping~
As
my wife said in her article about weight loss- While some find

you'll be pulling and twisting exceptionally hard, clean the nipples
with rubbing alcohol, which removes any oily substances that might
make your fingers slip. Or just grasp the nipple with a cloth
or tissue rather than with your bare fingers.
Rubber
tipped forceps, tight squeezing tweezers and other medical devices
which squeeze or clamp are great nipple play toys, too. Just let
your imagination run wild...
When
clamping, seat the clamp on the nipple before pulling on it. Allowing
it to squeeze into the tit helps it to get a firm grip. Place
the clamp toward the back of the tit, away from the tip. A clamp
on the tip can easily slide off when it is pulled. Nipple clamps,
like other tight binding, reduce circulation.
The
rule of thumb is no more than ten or fifteen minutes of use at
a time. Coldness, numbness, and discoloration are signals that
it is time to release the clamp. Releasing the clamp often brings
more pain than placing the clamp on in the first place because
of the sudden inflow of circulation to the blood vessels.
If
you want to reduce the sudden pain, you can press your warm palm
or squeeze the tips of your fingers on the clamped area as you
release the clamps. The pressure slows the blood return, which
eases the sudden fierceness of the pain. Of course, sudden pain
may be the goal, but it is always nice to have options.
Nipple
Suction
Another
great way to do nipple play is with suction... and cupping sets
work just perfectly! The plastic cups in the sets with a vacuum
pump device are very handy and easy to use. And many seeking a
more dramatic flair to their BDSM play, will use the Fire Cups,
which add a certain ritualistic effect to the scene, since it
incorporates the use of fire to heat the air inside the globe,
before covering the nipple and breast area with the cup. This
is a technique also used in Acupuncture called cupping when getting
the "chi" or energy to come to the surface of the skin.
Using
suction on nipples pulls the blood to the surface very rapidly,
thus making the nipple tissue sensitive and swollen. With repeated
use, many have enlarged their nipples with this technique. Always
be safe and sane... leave the suction on only for a few (10-15
minutes) minutes at a time. Light bruising may occur, which is
normal.
Tying
or placing small rubber bands around the base of the nipple to
force its protrusion, is another form of BDSM nipple play. One
method for doing this, is to first use the suction on the nipple
to make it erect, then tie and thin string around the base of
the nipple. This will keep it erect and is very stimulating to
the "patient" as the nipple is so sensitive at this point.
Another
method is to use a device called the Elastrator, which stretches
a small, thick rubber band wide open and allows it to be put on
the base of the nipple, then releases, and the rubber band is
left in place. This is a technique many use for "training" the
nipple to stay firm and erect or protruding.
Another
sensual nipple play scene is hot wax. Candles without perfumes
are the best. Again, test the "heat" of the melted wax before
applying any to sensitive nipple areas! If it is so hot that it
is burning the skin on the back of the hand, just think how hot
that will be on the soft tissue of a nipple or breast! If the
melted wax is a very hot type of wax (there are different variations
of wax, and thus the temperatures at which they melt also vary
and the resulting melted wax may hold the higher temperature longer)
just hold candle higher over the area and it will cool a bit as
it falls.
Dripping
is the best way... Try dripping an inch or so of wax over the
tit, which makes a cast of the nipple when you peel it off. Use
ice to harden the wax quickly which also adds another sensation!
Some, who are more experienced with playing with hot wax, like
to let votive candles build a small pool of wax and then pour
it all at once, but this too can burn, so it is not recommended
unless one is experienced with this sort of "waxing" method. Be
safe... practice first!
