Control Play is a complicated issue, as some people really enjoy
it and continue to do it without negative effects, while others
have suffered brain damage and even death from it. We of course
DO NOT recommend or endorse such activities. The following
article is simply to provide educational information regarding
this topic.
Breath
Control Play is also known as Erotic Asphyxiation, auto-erotic
asphyxiation (if solo), breath games, breath play, hypoxyphilia,
scarfing, gaspers, choke chicks, airwalkers and other names.
What
Is It?
This
is the process of limiting or restricting air and/or the supply
of oxygen to the brain. Below are more specific examples of
it-
Auto-erotic
asphyxiation:
The process of limiting or restricting air and/or the supply
of oxygen to the brain WHILE ALONE.
Strangling:
This usually involves compression of the carotid arteries to
prevent blood from reaching the brain.
Suffocation:
This involves somehow reducing the level of oxygen in the air
available to breathe (usually gradually).
Hanging:
This is a type of play that involves being suspended by the
neck.
Breath
play:
The process of making someone more conscious of, directing,
or using breath in play. The process of role-playing or bringing
about the psychological state of traditional breath play without
using traditional methods.
Why
Do People Do It?
The
pleasure derived from strangulation during sex can be physical
or psychological or both. Each type of pleasure can be quite
compelling on its own, but put them together and the combination
can create the motivation for a dangerous habit.
The
physical pleasure occurs because the brain's oxygen supply gets
reduced. This condition is called hypoxia and can lead to a
lucid semi-hallucinogenic state. Couple that state with an orgasm

restricting device that creates a sense of pain and restriction.
Other people simply hold their breath and some even do this
in public as an added "deviance" factor.
Oxygen
deprivation, meaning having a lower amount of oxygen available
(hypoxia) or no oxygen (anoxia) can make people feel light headed
as it is pleasurable to some people. Depending on the person
one can enjoy different levels of this.
Some
people also enjoy the sheer level of panic or risk that comes
with such an activity, much like people that jump out of an
airplane for the thrill. However, most people who claim to enjoy
the risk need to have some level of safety in order to enjoy
it. Like those jumping out of an airplane, a parachute is not
taken for granted. These people enjoy risk and letting go while
knowing precautions have been taken to provide security in order
to do it. However, no amount of precautions will take all the
risk out of doing this.

Risk
& Danger-
Potential
for fatal accidents occurring is always present with erotic
asphyxiation. It is estimated that between 250 and 1,000 deaths
occur yearly in the United States as a result of "asphyxiophilia."
Obviously, this means that there is extreme risk-taking in doing
something like this.
Below
are some of the main ways one can cause damage or death
from doing this activity-
Trachea Damage
The
trachea is commonly known as the windpipe. Some people who practice
breath control put pressure on the trachea during play which
can lead to the trachea rupturing. This will cause intense pain,
gasping for air, and thick secretions in the throat. This is
a medical emergency and proper medical care must be sought immediately.
This
kind of pressure can also cause Tracheitis, which is an inflammation
of the trachea. The signs of tracheitis are thick secretions
of the throat, swelling, croup like cough, sore throat, and
fever. This may seem minor at first and it may correct itself
if the throat is rested however, this can ultimately turn deadly
very quickly.
Larynx
Damage
The
larynx is the enlarged upper end of trachea below the root of
the tongue. It is the organ for the voice and consists of nine
cartilage bound together by elastic membranes and moved by muscles.
It is a very intricate structure and can be easily injured.
A
fracture of the Larynx is a serious injury that needs immediate
medical attention. Some signs of fracture or compression of
larynx are loud breathing, choking and gasping respiration,
weak and fast pulse, and blue skin. If left untreated it will
usually lead to death. It can also seriously damage the voice
if a person does manage to survive the injury.
Laryngitis
is also a complication of any form of compression of the larynx.
It is essentially an inflammation of the larynx. Some symptoms
of laryngitis are loss of voice, hoarseness, pain, and sometimes
coughing.
Blood
Vessel Damage
Breath
Play often puts stress on the blood vessels of the neck, especially
the carotid arteries. Post-traumatic carotid dissection is essentially
stretching and small tearing of the artery brought on by trauma
such as strangulation. The symptoms of this tearing are vision
loss, weakness, numbness, and/or speech difficulties. These
events may be temporary or permanent. The only treatment is
to get to a doctor and have it evaluated.
Stroke
A
stroke is basically a sudden loss of consciousness and paralysis
caused by a hemorrhage in the brain, blockage of a blood vessel
with a blood clot / foreign object, or a rupture of an artery
in the brain. Sometimes during strangulation or breath play,
plaque (a fatty substance in the blood vessels) is dislodged.
If that happens it can lodge itself in the blood vessel and
lead to a stroke.
Strokes
are unfortunately very common and a few symptoms of one are
loss of consciousness, paralysis, unequal pupils (large one
on side of stroke), paralysis usually on one side, sweating,
slightly lowered temperature, and speech disturbances.
You
are more prone to stroke if you have had one before, have a
history of heart or blood pressure problems, are overweight,
in poor physical condition, or have a cholesterol problem.
Cervical
Spine Damage
A
Fracture in the Cervical Spine will usually cause pain, possible
paralysis, fainting, and suppression of reflexes. A pinched
nerve in the area of the cervical spine will mimic a lot of
the symptoms of a fracture and is also very serious. In the
long term, if left untreated, it can cause constant pain and
loss of muscle tone. Remember, hanging was originally not
used to strangle someone but instead used to break their neck.
Airway
Obstruction by the Tongue
A
simple thing to overlook is that if your partner passes out
their tongue might fall back in their throat and continue to
suffocate them
Aspiration
of Vomit, Mucus, Saliva
Sometimes
a person can inhale his or her own vomit, mucus, or saliva.
This is very dangerous. Usually a person will not actually draw
the materials completely into the lungs. The symptoms of aspiration
of foreign materials is coughing, unconsciousness, cyanosis,
cardiac arrest, and cessation of breathing.
In
Conclusion -
With
that said, Breath Play or Erotic Asphyxiation is clearly very
risky behavior. It does not necessarily mean that someone who
enjoys it is sick or dysfunctional, as many people take major
risks with their health and life all the time and are normal,

are the effects?
The
most common effects include; delirium, vivid hallucinations,

thinking, altered body image, analgesia, amnesia, and
coma.
How
Quickly Does It Act?
This
depends on how it is ingested. When taken orally or nasally
the effects take 10 - 20 minutes to be realized. When
taken intravenously the effects are instantaneous. The
effects last less than 3 hours and the drug is detectable
in the system up to 48 hours depending on the method of

Date Rape
drugs are in recent years a new kind of rape threat and has
reared it's ugly head at parties, on campuses and in nightclubs.
What
exactly are date rape drugs?
Technically
speaking, any substance that renders you incapable of saying
no or asserting yourself and your needs can be used to commit
rape.
This can
include things like alcohol, marijuana or other street drugs,
designer or club drugs like ecstasy, over-the-counter sleeping
pills and antihistamines, even cold medications. However, the
term "date rape drug" usually applies to the drugs Rohypnol,
Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB) and Ketamine Hydrochloride.
Common
Scenario-
The perpetrator
slips a drug in someone's glass, waits for the effects to kick
in, and offers to assist the victim by "taking them home." Once
passed out, the offender takes advantage of the unconscious
individual.
GHB and
Rohypnol were originally classified as medications, specifically
central nervous system depressants. Doctors prescribed them
as sleep aids and relaxants in very low dosages.
These drugs
are known to have virtually 10 times the effect of Valium®,
another prescribed depressant, and they are extremely potent.
Mixed with alcohol, a small dose of GHB or Rohypnol will not
only cause unconsciousness for hours, but also temporarily take
away your memory when you come to. As used in sexual assaults,
date rape drugs can make you unconscious for up to 12 hours.
Fifteen
to 20 minutes after the drug is in your system, these reactions
usually occur (alcohol intensifies the drug's effect): drowsiness
slurred speech blurred vision respiratory problems dizziness
What's
makes Rohypnol and GHB so dangerous?
They are
virtually impossible to detect: They're tasteless. They're odorless.
They come in liquid, powder, and pill form. They blend in drinks
easily. They metabolize in your system within approximately
72 hours, which makes them difficult to detect if you go to
the police after the assault.
Drug-facilitated
rape is a crime that can put a violator away for 20 years and
cost him a $250,000 fine, but if the victim does not remember
the incident or doesn't go to the police in time, proving that
a date rape drug was ingested becomes increasingly difficult.
How can
I prevent date rape drugs from being used on me?
If you
do drink something, watch your drink like a hawk. Try to hold
it at all times. Don't leave your drink unattended. Don't trust
anyone with your drink. You should note that in some
cases, even the bartender could be in on drugging someone. Always
go with a buddy you can trust in case things go wrong. If you
feel uncharacteristically dizzy and/or disoriented, get help
immediately.
The original
manufacturer of Rohypnol, Hoffman-LaRoche Inc., a pharmaceutical
company, has taken extra measures to prevent this drug from
being abused by making it easier to spot. The company increased
its dissolving time to 45 minutes, made it form a chalky white
film floating on the top of liquid, and caused it to turn drinks
a blue color.
Regardless,
old pills are still around for consumption, and many pharmaceutical
companies that have produced a bootleg version of Rohypnol have
not adopted the new precautions Hoffman-LaRoche has taken.
What
should I do if I have been drugged and sexually assaulted?
Call a family
member, friend, the police, a doctor, or 911 to help get you
to a hospital.
Once you're
at a safe place, you call a rape crisis center like RAINN
at 1-800-656-HOPE.
If you want
to report the incident to the police, don't shower, bathe, douche,
change clothes, or straighten up the area until the evidence
can be collected. Go to a hospital, clinic, or private doctor
for treatment of injuries, tests for pregnancy and sexually
transmitted infections, and support services. Ask for a urine
test as quickly as possible to detect the presence of sedating
substances. Every hour counts to get the proof you need.
Getting
Out of Control In Australia-
New research
by the Australian Institute of Criminology has found up to 4,500
people in Australia had their drinks spiked in 2003 with about
40 percent of them sexually assaulted. "This is the first national
study on drink spiking and first figures but anecdotal evidence
points to a rise in incidence," said institute spokeswoman Leanne
Huddy, adding the full study was expected to be released by
the government later this year.
Australian
Federal Police (AFP) said the trend in Australia was fueled
by an increase in availability of prescription and illicit drugs,
with up to 100 substances now believed used to spike drinks
in what are deemed "drug-assisted sexual assaults".
Police in
Australia have begun to launch television, print and poster
campaigns warning people to be on the alert for drink spikers.
These campaigns are to raise public awareness and highlight
the legal ramifications for anyone caught in the act.
The penalties
for drink spiking in Australia vary from up to 25 years jail
for using stupefying drugs to commit an indictable offense such
as rape, to two years jail for administering or supplying a
prohibited or controlled substance.
Authorities
in the state of Victoria are pushing ahead with legal changes
to make drink spiking a serious crime after an accidental death
from spiking this year.
The surge
in drink spiking in Australia has mirrored similar trends in
the United States and Britain where on-the-spot tests are now
sold to check drinks. In Australia a matchbox sized kit called
Drink Checker was launched this month with a dropper and testing
pad to check for the most common date rate drugs, however there
is an easier and less expensive way to keep your drink safe.

Stern Show
The
FCC has been cracking down on radio and television stations
after several indecency incidents, including pop singer

and some lawmakers have demanded stations clean up their
acts or face higher penalties and possibly lose their
broadcast license. Clear Channel has already clamped down,
throwing shock jock Howard Stern's show off six of its
stations and adopting a zero tolerance policy against
broadcasts that violate the federal standards.
Howard's
Response To The FCC's Actions:
"This
is not a surprise. This is a follow up to the McCarthy
type "witch hunt" of the administration and the activities
of this group of presidential appointees in the FCC, led
by "Colin Powell Jr." and his band of players.
They
and others (a senator from Kansas City to a congresswoman
from New Mexico) are expressing and imposing their opinions
and rights to tell us all who and what we may listen to
and watch and how we should think about our lives. So
this is not a surprise. It is pretty shocking that governmental
interference into our rights and free speech takes place
in the U.S.
It's
hard to reconcile this with the "land of the free" and
the "home of the brave". I'm sure what's next is the removal
of "dirty pictures" like the 20th century German exhibit

to trick users into providing sensitive personal information.
Responding to "phishing" eMails put your personal and
financial information at risk.
Be
Aware of Phishing Scams-
Many
companies like eBay are experiencing problems with hackers
using a technique called "Phishing." This is
when the name and logo of a company has been used without
consent or knowledge by that company to acquire sensitive
information from unsuspecting Web and eMail users.
For
example you could get an eMail saying that your eBay account
needs to be updated. You innocently click on the link
they send you which can lead you to a fake web site asking
you for your password or credit card information or the
link can be to a file that contains a virus. You need
to take precautions. When it doubt, simply type in the
real web site address- www.eBay.com and contact customer
service to make sure that the eMail is legitimate.
While

To Prevent Spam
Removal Addresses: Never
respond to the 'removal request' eMail address that shows
up in some spam. Doing so is a quick way to end up on
the list of dozens of other spammers. It's best just to
complain directly to the spammer's service provider.
Usenet
Newsgroups: Never post a message
to a newsgroup using your real eMail address. A very simple
way to cloak your address from the spam-robots is to add
'spam-bait' to it. For instance, if your eMail address
is "jdoe@internet.com" change it to something like "jdoe|NO_Spam@internet.com|NoSpam".
This makes it easy for others to see your address, but
the spam robots cannot make that distinction (yet...).
Use
spam-bait on eMail addresses in your news-reader program
and in any signature files you use. Robots can get your
address from there too.
Personal
Web sites: If you have a personal
web page as many people do these days... computer hackers
target those and will "spider" (use computer programs
to search through the site) through web sites to collect
eMail addresses. When our web site first went up our spam
and the number of viruses sent to us did too. We have
since put a special Java Script code on our site that
protects us from that. If you have a web site... you may
want to make sure that you do not have your eMail address
on it or use the code we do which you can find at http://www.joemaller.com/js-mailer.shtml.
Online
Services: Never publish a 'user
profile'. Find out if you can request exclusion from any
member directories. Ask the service about setting up a
separate user ID (with separate eMail box) that you can
use for chat rooms or newsgroups. Also, ask if the service
offers any mail filters to keep messages from known spammers
out of your mailbox.
Online
Software Registration: Always
double check which options you are checking when registering
your software. Online registration programs often let
you choose to have your address added to a list of addresses
so the business can send you eMail Sometimes you have
to uncheck a box if you don't want advertisements.
Electronic
News Subscriptions: The same warnings as above apply here.

Gay Museum
A
gay museum recognizing and celebrating Britain's "secret
history" of homosexuality is going to open in Britain.
Simon Hughes, the Liberal Democrat candidate, said a museum
would "celebrate, educate, inform and counter ignorance
and prejudice" by recognizing the contributions that gay
men and women have made to London life.
The
museum will feature noteworthy letters, diaries, photographs,
drawings, sculptures and personal possessions of famous
homosexuals and bisexuals, such as Lord Mountbatten, Beverley
Nichols, Florence Nightingale, William Pitt the Younger,
Catherine Cookson, Lawrence of Arabia, Gerard Manley Hopkins,
Winston Churchill, Lord Byron, Daphne du Maurier and William
Shakespeare. Some of these people were, of course, celibate
and only gay by orientation. Others, like Winston Churchill,
who had a fling with musical comedy star Ivor Novello,
appear to have had only one-off gay encounters. Providing
these distinctions are made, the queer museum should include
them all.

Summerskill, chief executive of the gay rights group Stonewall,
said he was delighted to see all the main parties supporting
the museum. He added: "Recognition of the contribution
made by gay people to history is long overdue."
