Got Juice?
By Lisa S. Lawless, Ph.D.

I have just begun my journey into juicing and I must say it has been wonderful! Juicing is a great addition to any diet. It's an easy way to add more vegetables to your diet, in a more concentrated form than if they were cooked. And while vegetables, when cooked, lose some of their vitamins and minerals, juicing allows you to ingest all of the nutrients.

There are a few simple rules for juicing, such as drinking a variety of fruit and vegetable juices. To avoid consuming too much sugar, you should drink at least as much vegetable juice as fruit juice. It's still important to eat plenty of necessary fiber found in legumes, whole grains, and whole fruits and vegetables. Juicing releases the nutrients from the fiber of the juice, allowing you to drink vitamins and minerals that would not otherwise be absorbed by the body, and leaves the fiber behind.

It's also important to start slowly when juicing as your body is not accustomed to digesting such a concentrated forms of vegetable nutrients and fruit sugars. It's also not generally recommended that you drink juice with a meal; you should drink your juice between meals or have juice as a meal, such as drinking fresh juice for breakfast.

Many juicing enthusiasts, like Jay Kordich (The Juiceman), have some amazing stories to tell about how juicing saved their lives. The Juiceman even offers an audio clip about the benefits of juicing and a Quicktime movie about the importance of juicing.

The danger is that some naive people will believe his claims and forego or abandon proven medical treatments to rely instead on an almost exclusively juice diet.

You'll find that juicing recipes often have specific purposes, such as to give you more energy, improve your memory, or generally improve your health.

I can say that I love it and use various juice recipes 2 - 3 times a day now. I feel a difference in my energy levels, and my skin, hair and nails have never been in better shape! I am totally smitten with my juicer, it is now a big part of my daily life. Should you decide to try it, you will have to find the right juicer for your needs, and I found that the Juiceman II meets them all. I did plenty of research and I think you will agree that it is a great juicer, and well worth the money.

Features: Powerful 1/2-horsepower motor quickly juices most fruits and vegetables Makes tasty, nutritious, and additive-free juice blends Stainless-steel blade, basket with micro-mesh strainer screens out pulp High-capacity pulp receptacle for continuous juicing Two-speed control for soft or hard produce

Whether you're into nutrition-laden wheatgrass tonics or really superb fresh orange juice, a juicer is a great way to go. Fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet, and additive-free fresh juice is a convenient and quick alternative to eating all of them whole. This professional-quality Juiceman makes the process very quick for the serious juice enthusiast. A few simple twists attach and detach the juice bowl, blade basket, and cover to and from the base unit, which has a footprint comparable to the average blender. Produce cut to the appropriate size goes in the feed tube, then is gently pressed into the blade basket with a plunger. Juice pours out one spout and the pulp--including seeds and skin--shoots out into a separate pulp basket. It has two speed settings, low for softer produce such as oranges and apples and high for harder fruits and vegetables such as carrots and pineapples--in practice this unit is plenty powerful enough to almost instantly go through baby carrots at low speed. Enjoy the juice and use the pulp in recipes such as those for carrot cake. A basic cookbook and audiotape of juicing tips are included. --Dale Steinke

Lose More Than Weight On High Protein Diets-
Lose Your Health!

By Lisa S. Lawless, Ph.D.
Holistic Wisdom C.E.O.

If you are like me, you probably know of someone who has, or have tried a high protein diet yourself. High protein diets are all the rage and more and more people are getting on them. I've got some bad news about them, and if you or anyone you know is on one. Please read this.

The high-fat, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets such as the popular "Atkins Diet" may risk long-term health problems, according to the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The ADA is a professional organization representing the nation's licensed nutritionists and dietitians.

The Atkins Diet, and others like it, trigger short-term weight loss through a process called ketosis. Ketosis occurs whenever the body lacks a sufficient supply of carbohydrates, a prime source of energy. During ketosis, carbohydrate-depleted metabolisms turn to other sources, including ketones from stored fat or protein, to satisfy daily energy needs.

So the issue is not whether you will lose weight on the diet, the issue is at what cost, and only to gain it back again when you are done with this very unhealthy diet. The first bit of weight loss is water weight, the carbohydrates that are in your muscles, and as you progress on the diet you will lose some fat, but you will also lose muscle mass.

It's so high in cholesterol and saturated fat, and counters the documentation of a healthy diet from the American Heart Association to the American Dietetic Association. Is Atkins so bold as to say that they are wrong? It is also interesting to note that the diet is also low in fruits and vegetables and whole grains. These are foods with proven health benefits. Shouldn't a diet be healthy? Shouldn't it be a life style change not some quick fix that leaves us more unhealthy than when we started?

This does not even go into the facade that we can get all of our vitamins and nutrients from a vitamin and mineral supplement, because we can't! Fiber or photochemicals can only be found at the source. Grains, veggies, and fruits... you take those out ofthe equation and you are looking for trouble.

Stevia- Sinfully Sweet
by Linda and Bill Bonvie

"A perennial shrub of the aster family, stevia contains natural compounds-specifically, stevioside and rebaudioside A-that are estimated to be 150 to 400 times sweeter than sugar. Advocates claim that the herb also offers a host of health benefits, and is even a tonic for the skin. But here's the clincher: Stevia sweetens without calories. While it tastes sweeter than honey, it's about as fattening as water."

Thai Noodles & Banana Delight with Lemon Frosted Topping

Thai Noodles-

Serves 2-4 people depending on amount of vegetables added

Marinade & Sauce

1/4 c. soy sauce
1/4 c. vinegar
1/2 T. stevia powder (to taste)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 T. Thai red chile dipping sauce, or red pepper flakes to taste
1-2 T. peanut butter

Other Stuff

1/2 package Thai rice noodles (they are white/clear, flat, thin and about 1/4 in across)
1 c. of cubed cucumber
1 c. fresh mung bean sprouts, rinsed very well in cold water
1/2 lemon, cut into wedges
1 c. shredded or julienned carrot (if you like cabbage, it works well instead of the carrot) coarsely chopped cilantro, to taste
2 T. roasted peanuts, chopped up 4 oz. firm regular tofu, well drained
1-2 T. peanut oil

Mix up the sauce and put it in the bottom of a large bowl. Cube the tofu into 1/2" squares. Soak in the sauce for about 1/2 hour.

Prepare the noodles per the package instructions (usually par boil for 3 minutes or soak in hot water for 20 minutes). Drain well.

After the tofu is done marinating, heat up the oil in a non-stick pan or wok. You want the oil to be hot enough to sear the tofu on contact. This will keep it from sticking and soaking up the oil.

Toss the tofu until browned. Take off the heat while you toss the noodles in with the sauce or get it ready in between tosses.

Add the noodles to the pan. Cook until the excess liquid is gone. The noodles may crisp up a bit, or they may be soft - it depends how cooked they were and how well drained they were. They are good either way.

Dish up noodles, top with cilantro and peanuts bits. Serve with a lemon wedge and little piles of veggies all around. Put Thai red chile sauce or red pepper flakes on the table.
