Medical
Grade Silicone
Guide
To Materials
Sex
Toys & More
Silicones
are polymers that contain silicon with carbon, hydrogen, oxygen,
and sometimes other chemical elements. It is flexible, heat-resistant,
nonstick, non-porous and rubber-like without containing any toxins.
Silicone is flexible, quickly adapts to body temperature.
There
are different grades of silicone: tin and platinum. They have
different chemical make ups, longevitys, and compatibilitys. While
all of these facts are true for either silicone, only platinum
grades can be medical grade quality.
Example
Silicone is used to make many high quality adult toys. Medical
Grade Silicone is the most reliable, safe, health-smart soft material
used for toys.
Some
great examples of 100% Medical Grade Silicone toys are: the Share
Dildo the Curve and the
Jollies.
Another
use for 100 % Medical Grade Silicone is breast implants.
Allergy
Or Toxin Warnings
100%
Medical Grade Silicone is hypoallergenic and free of phthalates.
This material is inert which means it will not react with other
materials. It is stable and won't disintegrate or react when next
to a another object like some other materials such as Jelly can.
Cleaning
Recommendations
Silicone has no open pores and cannot harbor bacteria. It is very
easy to clean. You can boil 100% medical grade silicone as it
remains stable up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also clean
this material with a 10% bleach solution or alcohol swabs and
yes, you may also put it in your dishwasher.
Since
sex toy hygiene is of the utmost importance, 100% medical grade
silicone is the best choice in sex toys.
Lubricants
Waterbased only.
There
are different qualities of silicone out there and different qualities
of silicone in lubrications, which means some lower grade silicone
lubricants will bond to some silicone toys and ruin the toy. This
could also lead to a chemical reaction that leads to the surface
"opening" and is irreparable. Such a chemical reaction results
in unpleasant bacteria and smells becoming lodged in the toy.
Therefore, we recommend waterbased lubricants with all silicone
toys. However, if you prefer silicone over waterbased lubricants
you may try a test patch on the bottom of the toy. If the area
does not become gummy then you should be okay using that silicone
lubricant with that particular silicone toy.
Recycling
Level
Silicone
is a chemically inert substance. This means that there are no
toxic ingredients that can be out-gassed, or leached from the
substance. Silicone itself, is not toxic to aquatic plants or
animals nor does it have a negative effect on soil organisms.
Although silicone is not biodegradable, it can be recycled.
