Does
Television Increase
Teen Sexual Behavior?
There is a study that has recently come out that indicates that
watching sexual situations on television actually increases
their sexual behavior. This overly simplistic study is more
dangerous than sex on television if you ask me.
Think of
it in terms of what came first, the chicken or the egg?
If your
child watches football on television and plays football on a
little league team, does he play football because he watches
it on T.V. or does he watch it on TV because he plays football
and is interested in it?
Messages
like this actually harm our children because sex sells and it
will never be out of the mainstream. We will always have sexual
situations on television because it is a large part of who we
are, what we desire and there is a large appeal to watch it.
A study
like this prevents healthy, frank and open discussion about
sex, STDs, birthcontrol because backward thinking people will
insist that there should not be any sexual content available
on television for teens. Kind
of like the simpletons that are against sex education and for
abstinence only. Statistics have proven that the kids that are
not provided with sex education and commit to abstinence have
a higher STD rate than kids who receive sex ed.
Studies
like this only further the cause of fundamentalists who can't
seem to get it through their head that sexuality is a beautiful
part of who we are, that children are naturally curious about
their own sexuality and that teaching our children about healthy
sexual relationships, STD prevention and birth control is what
will keep our children safe, and happier and isn't that what
we all really want?
Certainly
we should not allow our young children to watch porn, but showing
teens more responsible sexual situations on television is not
going to harm them. It will show them that it is normal to be
a sexual human being and provide a better view of the positive
and negative issues of sex. We hope there will be more sexuality
on television, just less of the trashy, reckless, drunken kind
of sex that shows none of the reality of such behavior.
