US
Government Invading
Your Privacy
Spying On Your Internet Activity & Invading Your Sexual
Rights
| It
seems that many people have a variety of opinions about
pornography. Some believe that it is all right and can
be a healthy sexual way to be visually stimulated, some
believe that it is for them only if it follows certain
guidelines, and some believe that it is not all right
for them, but is okay for others to view if that is what
makes them happy. Still there are those who feel that
porn is not appropriate for anyone and some even go further
and believe it to be evil, dirty and outright disgusting
no matter what type of adult entertainment it is.
In
addition to the Title
18 U.S.C. § 2257 law that was passed in May 2005,
the US Department of Justice is quietly attempting
to put in a place another law that will violate the
privacy of Americans in the name of fear by requiring
Internet service providers to retain records of their
customers' online activities.

Data retention
rules could permit police to obtain records of e-mail chatter,
Web browsing or chat-room activity. The DOJ is using the excuse
that this would assist in better prosecuting potential terrorists
or those viewing child porn.
It used
to be that the Justice Department felt that data retention
was unnecessary and imposed an unacceptable burden on Internet
providers. The current proposal appears to originate with
the Justice Department's Child Exploitation and Obscenity
Section, which enforces federal child pornography laws. But
once mandated by law, the logs likely would be mined during
terrorism, copyright infringement and even routine criminal
investigations.
Currently
federal law called the Electronic Communication Transactional
Records Act regulates data preservation. It requires Internet
providers to retain any "record" in their possession for 90
days "upon the request of a governmental entity."
Trends
Are Stripping Away Sexuality Rights
The US
Government has been stripping away the freedoms and rights
of Americans while using their fears to justify it through
"security". One of the latest slew of things the government
is pushing are the new .XXX domains to be used by all sites
that have adult content. I believe that this will only serve
to make it more difficult for adult sites to be found by consumers
through future segregated search engines, but the government
will be better able to monitor those who visit such domains
which brings us back to the ISP record keeping intrusions
on privacy.
People
are often already afraid to visit adult sites. They are having
a harder and harder time going to adult boutiques with their
pictures being taken and published publicly these days. They
have simply to turn to the Internet to try and maintain some
level of privacy and autonomy... and yet, that too is being
threatened.
Big brother
certainly has a face in the religious right who apparently
are under the impression that freedom of religion does not
mean freedom from religion. It is truly a war at this point
between those who understand the foundation of democracy,
freedom and the constitution and those who seek to violate
the rights of Americans in the name of fear and control.
