Hi Lisa,

My husband and I are going on a vacation ( a long overdue one I may add... away from work, kids, and the stressors of life). I wanted to take my vibrator with me, but I am afraid that security will find it at the airport and there will be a scene. What is your advice?

Hi Brenda,

With spring break here and summer vacations around the corner, this is a topic that is on many people's mind, so I am glad you asked! You are right in assuming security may discover it as due to increases in security these days, airport security personnel are searching carry-on luggage more often.

What this means is that you might want to "check in" the bag your toy(s) are in rather than carrying it on. When you carry on the bag security is not just looking for explosives, but for any item that could be a potential weapon. So it is common for them to ask people to open their bags if they have any doubts as to what something is, or if you are picked for a random search.

Also, make sure to keep batteries out of the vibrator or toy that you bring so that your suitcase is not detained for making what a security guard may think is a bomb! I take my batteries out and keep them separate these days. However, long ago I actually had my sex toy vibrating like a mad hornet as I walked down the halls of the airport, while innocently wondering where that annoying sound was coming from! I was a bit embarrassed to discover that it was my vibrator inside my suitcase, and I had to pull over in the ladies room to take the batteries out before going to security. That would have been pretty funny had I actually made it there not realizing... or embarrassing depending on how you look at it.

If you have time, you could also try mailing your toys to the address of your hideaway and have them held for your arrival. However, be aware that if you are traveling outside the country the toys may be confiscated by customs and for goodness sake, make sure to take the batteries out if you do mail them or you may have an International scandal on your hands! Hee, hee!

Personally, I just take a small vibrator with me on long trips like my trusty Waterdancer and I tuck it in a suitcase I check in with batteries out... but what you bring is up to you and certainly can make your vacation a whole lot more fun with your hubby!
