Debunking The Myth That Sperm Solely Determines Egg Fertilization

Sperm surrounding egg

Turns Out It's A Collaborative Relationship

Most people believe that human fertilization is determined by sperm racing to get to the egg and that the egg passively awaits it like a princess in a tower waiting for a knight to rescue her. Turns out that's a myth!

Sperm don't race to fertilize the egg; rather, they are carried through that reproductive tract, a process known as hyperactivation. This process of the vagina propels sperm towards the egg. This was reviewed in "The Egg and the Sperm: How Science Has Constructed a Romance Based on Stereotypical Male/Female Roles" By Emily Martin in 1991.

Contrary to the notion that the vagina is a hostile environment for sperm, the female reproductive tract rolls out the red carpet in some ways, which is crucial in facilitating this journey.

Furthermore, eggs release chemical attractants to guide sperm toward them, and eggs show preferences for some men's sperm. Thus, fertilization is not merely a one-sided conquest by sperm. The female reproductive system plays an active role, and it seems the egg has a large part in deciding which sperm gets selected.

How Sperm Got All The Credit

It seems that older ideas of masculinity drive some of the old myths of it being determined by the strongest sperm. Perhaps the idea that sperm take the egg by competing with one another and seeing the egg as being in a hostile environment overlaps with old gender stereotypes.

These types of gendered myths still persist in education in institutions such as middle school to medical school. The problem is that these narratives create misinformation and misrepresent biology. They also can create biased societal perceptions of gender roles.

Why It's Important

Recognizing and addressing this biased misinformation is essential to creating a world where science and education are grounded in truth.

Embracing this path enables us to build a brighter, more accurate future where knowledge shines as a beacon reflecting accurate information, not the fairy tales of the past.
