What Is Average?

If you have ever wondered if women's vulvas and vaginas vary in size and shape, the answer is that they do. In a British obstetrics journal, "women vary widely in genital dimensions." In other words, variety is typical.

Vaginas tend to mirror body type. Taller women tend to have larger vaginas because genetically, they will need to most likely accommodate passing a larger child. Age and the number of children also affect a vagina's dimensions which means the older you get, or the more kids you have, the bigger a vagina can become in its relaxed state. Keep in mind, exercising the pelvic floor muscles, also known as Kegel exercises (with or without Kegel Exercisers), can do a lot to help return vaginal muscles into shape.

How Big Is The Average Vagina?

In a 1996 study of 56 women, doctors found the vagina's length varied between 2.7 inches to 5.8 inches. The width ranged from 1.9 inches to 2.5 inches. Whether or not size matters is typically a question directed at men, but this is also a concern for women.

Do Men Care About Vagina Size?

Most men do not notice a big difference in vagina size, and where it impacts them most seems to be that they are concerned that their penis is not going to be satisfying. If he has a small penis and she has a wider vagina, there are a few things that can help, such as strategic sexual positions, clitoral vibrators, penis extenders, penis pumps, couple's sex toys, and other body safe sex toys.

The vagina is a very stretchy organ, and it can contract and expand much like the stomach. When unused, the vagina can collapse and fold and then expand when stretched. This means that it is continually changing in size, which can vary based on sexual activity, sexual arousal levels, childbirth, etc.

When A Vagina Is Too Tight

Women can have painful sex if the vagina is too short or tight. Childbirth can also make a vagina smaller from a prolapse where organs fall out of place or an adhesion from a C-section.

If you are experiencing pain during sex, we encourage you to review the underlying cause with your OBGYN. You may also wish to work with a physical therapist that specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction. Learn more with our helpful guide on Painful Sex regarding the causes and solutions.

When A Vagina Is Too Loose

Women most often find that they lose vaginal tone after childbirth and report feeling loose and less sexually satisfied. This may also have to do with hormonal changes that affect low libido after childbirth.

The pelvic organ prolapse quantification system measures vaginal recovery after childbirth. In the cases of vaginal birth, most women only had a slight increase in their vaginal opening size. More dramatic changes were muscular functioning, which impacted pelvic floor strength and injury that can occur from vaginal birth.

This is why Kegel exercises have become more popular as they can dramatically strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and aid in recovery. They can also help improve sex, increase orgasm intensity, and prevent urinary incontinence.

How To Do Kegel Exercises

Kegel exercises are merely contracting and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. This can be done by flexing that muscle as well as using Kegel Exercise Weights.
